ABOUT US

On March 21, we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day.

March 21 is a special colorful day not only because of the first day of spring. Today we also celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. This holiday was established to raise sensitivity to the needs of people with Down Syndrome and to spread knowledge about what Down Syndrome really is.
People with Down syndrome have an extra, third chromosome in the 21st pair of chromosomes. Such a genetic change makes people with Down Syndrome unique, sensitive, extremely colorful, but they often struggle with social misunderstanding.

The third chromosome appears in humans completely by accident – just like by chance we sometimes put on mismatched socks in a hurry. This is why, as a sign of solidarity with people with Down Syndrome, on the first day of spring, many individuals put on colorful mismatched socks. In doing so, they draw attention to how some of us are unique, special – and that because of this, they often struggle with a lack of acceptance from part of society.
